With so many home renovation shows, and glossy magazines displaying gorgeous kitchens–it can be really tempting to renovate your own. But before starting a kitchen renovation, it’s best to get an idea of what the renovation will cost.
Kitchen renovation prices will vary depending on how much you want to change, and more importantly what you’re willing to spend. For a very basic update, expect to invest at least $5,000. For a complete re-model you are looking at a minimum approximate price range of $11,000 to $45,000. This budget does not include any unexpected costs that may arise, so be sure to put aside some additional funds just in case.
It’s important to keep in mind that overall cost can change depending on what materials and appliances you choose, so don’t hesitate to ask your home renovation team any questions that you may have about different materials that may fit your lifestyle and budget.
You may be wondering how your home renovation budget is divided. Each section below will give you some examples of the costs associated your new dream kitchen.
Please note that these price ranges are meant to give you a general overview of costs and are not set in stone. The final costs are subject to change depending on your needs and the elements in your home.
Cabinets
This may come as a surprise, but a large portion of your kitchen renovation budget will go towards cabinets. Depending on how much you want to spend, there are three categories you can choose from and a variety of different woods and laminates. Stock cabinets are the most budget-friendly, because they are pre-built and ready to install. Semi-custom and custom cabinets are more costly because they are built from scratch to fit your specifications.
Stock: $60 – $400
Semi-Custom: $150 – $1,000
Custom: $500 – $1,500
Countertops
There is a larger gap in countertop prices because of the wide variety of materials available and the corresponding installation costs. Be sure to speak with your home renovation team about the pros and cons of different materials, and how they will affect your needs.
To give you an idea of countertop prices, here are a few examples:
Tile: $4 – $8 per tile
Laminate: $21 – $40 per square foot
Granite: $45 – $400 per square foot
Flooring
Floors, similar to countertops, are available in materials to suit every budget. It’s best to choose a material that suits your lifestyle. For example, do not purchase hardwood flooring if you have children who are heavily involved in outdoor sports. Hardwood will not hold up against mud and cleats for very long!
Hardwood: $3 – $12 per square foot
Vinyl: $1 – $5 per square foot
Porcelain Tile: $1 – $20 per square foot
Appliances
Appliances such as stoves and dishwashers come in all different shapes and sizes and have a variety of different features. Take your time and visit a few stores, because many appliances have similar features–but very different price tags.
Custom: $1,000 – $10,000
Store-Bought: $100 – $5,000
